Advent: What shall I do? part 2

More suggestions for Advent devotions.

1. Good News of Great Joy — I mentioned earlier Desiring God’s booklet of daily Advent readings. It is available now to download.

2. A Twitter follower suggested that I check out The Park Forum. They describe themselves as “helping urbanites enjoy the Bible daily by writing short and smart devotionals. As the Park is to the City, so the Word is to Life.” I’m curious to see their devotionals during advent.

3. A Jesus Advent Celebration — MrsHLBjr’s comment on my previous Advent post:

Last year, I downloaded Ann Voskamp’s Jesse Tree Advent Devotional which includes printable ornaments to be cut out and hung on the tree after reading the day’s entry. We also used this in conjunction with her son’s advent wreath, which can also be used during lent (along with her Trail to the Tree Lent Devotional) and the 40 days until the Ascension.

My kids loved this and we created new traditions for our family with these tools.

4. Knowing Him by Name — Bethany’s comment on my previous post:

Focus on the Family has an an advent book which is free for download. It uses Scripture readings, activities, and thought-provoking questions centered around the names and titles of Jesus to help parents introduce their children to the Savior.

Thank you, thank you for your suggestions.

Are there other Advent resources you’d like to mention?

  1. Last year we did Truth in the Tinsel (http://truthinthetinsel.com/)
It was a bit over my 2.5 yr old’s head, so I decided to forego it this year and just do a simple advent calendar from Hobby Lobby that incorporates small scripture verses with a daily chocolate to tell the Christmas story. I will probably pick up Truth in the Tinsel next year, when my kids will be 4.5 and 3.

  2. Thank you for the resources! We’re serving in a “creative access” country so we can’t go into our nearest bookstore and find resources. Any suggestions on readings for lighting the advent wreath during a worship service? Our house group would like to include it in our services this year. Thank you!

  3. I am looking for advent booklets of some sort to hand out door to door in my neighborhood. I would have to buy a couple hundred to do it, so cost is an issue, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  4. We are going to try The Real Christmas Tree-Advent Calendar Pack this year!

  5. Thank you so much for these resources, I also live in a country where I can not find English materials! may God bless you there and us here as we prepare to celebrate the most wonderful birth in history!

  6. Jennifer Palumbo

Last year, I bought an advent devotional by Nancy Guthrie ( http://www.amazon.com/Let-Every-Heart-Prepare-Room/dp/1414364415/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1354104976&sr=8-8&keywords=nancy+guthrie). It has a reading for all of December and it worked out great. My three kids listened (ages 4,7, and 10) and enjoyed it. Of course, I love her advent anthology for myself too. Merry Christmas!

  7. I have just come cross these advent readings for the young by a lady called Betsy who has a blog called a part of the main http://partofthemain.wordpress.com/advent-readings-2011/
I am planning to use these with our manger scene this year.

  8. Noel, Thank you so much for mentioning The Park Forum. I was able to meet Pastor John (along with the great Desiring God team) with the Kellers last year when he was here for the Grace & Race talk. If you’re ever in NYC, I would love to grab coffee or tea. Blessings to you this season. Bethany Jenkins (Founder, The Park Forum)
