Caldecott Honors-1

madeline

On Randolph Caldecott’s birthday, I made note of my favorite of the winners of the annual Caldecott Medal for outstanding illustrations in children’s books.

I try to imagine how agonizing it must be for the judges to come up with just ONE book each year. You can see what I mean if you look over the Caldecott Honor Books, the titles that didn’t make it for the Medal, but were so good the judges just had to recognize them.

To take it one step further, these books are reminders of the other excellent work by the same illustrators–classics on a child’s bookshelf.

Here are a few of my favorite Caldecott Honor Books–from 1940, 1949, 1962, and 1971 respectively.

I’ll post more another day.

  1. Robert Mcloskey is one of my favorite all time children’s literature authors! Time of Wonder is simply beautiful. Every one of his books transports you to the beautiful and rugged simplicity of Maine living. I find myself reading them long after the kids have crawled down from my lap. :)

  2. My favorite Robert McCloskey (besides Make Way for Ducklings) is One Morning in Maine. I can feel the sand in my toes as they dig for clams. And I had a loose tooth at the time I received the book, too! :)

  3. Frog and Toad and Little Bear books were favorites when our girls were small.
Robert McCloskey knows how to take us to “storyland”.
There’s something so inviting, welcoming and even hospitable about his stories and illustrations.

  4. Frog and Toad, and Little Bear’s Visit were two of my favorite books when I was little. I still love them both.

  5. The Ox-cart Man is a favorite in our home.

  6. I love children’s literature (good children’s lit) and there is so much. I can’t wait to be a grandmother to share some of these with them. When I was a child development major in the mid 70′s I spent hours blowing up “Frog and Toad Are Friends” on an opaque project to use as a presentation. Love that book. Wish I knew what happened to that project! :)

  7. I love all those books!
