Just tie a yellow ribbon. Not.

yellow ribbon

Last thing before we left home I knotted yellow ribbon onto each of our bag handles so they’d be easy to spot at baggage claim on arrival. Smart thinking, huh?

Except that somebody else had the same idea. Ramoul, who was helping us, found our garment bag with a yellow ribbon and piled it onto our baggage trolley. Except it wasn’t ours. We almost left with somebody else’s bag, with a different sort of yellow ribbon.

By the time we returned that one to the carousel, a tour group of 20 or more people had collected all their bags–each marked with a yellow ribbon. While Johnny was searching through their pile, I finally spotted ours, one of the last off the plane.

So next time? Fabric strips torn from the ugliest, gaudiest cloth I can find.

  1. Try the little stuffed animals from Mcdonalds happy meals.

  2. I use orange masking tape around the handles. I’ve never seen another bag with that. It’s ugly but it works.

  3. I’ve thought about using a stencil and spray painting a logo or name on my luggage but have never gotten around to actually doing it. Last trip I tied TWO strips of different colored fabric.

  4. lol – I’ve done this with missions teams before and experienced something similar. May God bless your time in Egypt!

  5. I used bright color duct tape on my bag. I taped on the on the handle and tape and make the cross on the bottom of the bag with wheels which would be facing up on the beltline.

I hadn’t had any problem with that. I myself would love to find hunter orange bag which would be easy to spot but then again I would duct tape it.

  6. My grandparents used 3 strips of colored tape on their bags when they were traveling the world to minimize duplicates.

We used red duct tape to mark everyone’s bags on a short term trip a couple of years ago and had the same experience.

  7. Taking notes on the ribbon… I was just looking for a pretty green ribbon to tie on my suitcases and now I know better. Unique, ugly fabric… husband’s tropical pattern shirts!!!

It’s my first trip to Europe, turning 39 in April. I have only been in two countries so far; left my home country of Brasil and moved to the US, 15 years ago.

  8. On my first trip to Romania, I bought a teal luggage set and tied bright yellow and pink polka-dot ribbons on mine. I also labeled them in a rather meticulous fashion. I had two goals:

    1) Easily identifiable.. absolutely unmistakable.
    2) Anyone who came into contact with my luggage would probably be too intimidated by it to mess with it.
